Newfoundland Arrival- Part II
Back for an update after a delicious meal including an appetizer of cod tongues with scrunchions more cod as an entree, a local beer in a cool bottle, and a partridgeberry tart!
This morning it took about an hour to get off the ferry- so many people and vehicles- and we decided to drive straight north about 2.5 hours along the west coast to Corner Brook where we are spending the night. This is the largest city on the western side of Newfoundland and second in size only to St. John's.
We hadn't eaten since 6pm last night, so found a local diner and I had the best egg sandwich I've ever eaten. As we were getting out of the car on the street, a woman pulling up to a red light rolled her window down and yelled out "WELCOME!!" to us. The Virginia plate was a giveaway, but I can't even imagine a situation where that would happen at home. Oh Canada- our very own Come From Away moment! After breakfast we drove along South Humber Arm in the Bay of Islands. This is essentially a coastal route that follows the southerly-most of three finger-like tidal bays. Little communities dot the shoreline and as we drove toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence a series of incredible huge domed islands appeared. Despite some on-and-off rain and more clouds than sun, we had breath-taking views around every corner. We drove all the way to the ocean, ending in the town of Lark Harbour which had an incredible old cemetery on a hill overlooking the water.
We stopped at Blow Me Down Provincial Park and took a short hike (actually 12 stories worth of stairs) to an overlook with 360 degree views of the mountains and water.
So far we've logged over 1,000 miles in four days and it's catching up to us tonight. Jen's Fit Bit told her she got 58 minutes of sleep last night, so we're hitting the hay early to get ready for tomorrow and our first look at the fjords of Gros Morne. Can't wait!
